Basketball is a game that requires skills, training and mind games. Most of us think that since it is a point game, only offense matters. But the truth is that a team who is good with defense goes a long way and is appreciated for its game. Mostly players do not keep this in mind and try to become good shooters so that they are appreciated for their contribution to the team and recognized by viewers. A player with good defense will always be valuable to the team so it is important that he/she pays attention toward the defensive moves as well.
In defense you should be steady and fast. You should read the person’s mind whom you’re defending. This can be done by exercises that require jumping on the sides as well as backwards and forwards with both the feet one by one.
Also, try to weave and run making an x. This would help in cutting through and checking the person in charge of the ball. You will be able to steal the ball with this exercise.
A great defender is always good with rebounding as well. To become a good re-bounder, try to hit the ball on the board and then jump to catch it in any direction. This will train you in catching the ball in a game and help your team.
If you want to be good at shuffling the ball try exercise that demand push slid step technique which helps in faking and brings agility in the body. When defensing use both the hands, One hand should be over your shoulder and the other one below your knee so that it does not allow the opponent to shoot or cut through and would help in intercepting the ball.
While practicing, always think that it is an important game going on. If you do so you will always perform well. Closing out is also important and would help you to stop the opponent from scoring.
The defensive position that requires your knees to bend with one hand downwards and the other over your shoulder is an important position. Ball drill is also an important aspect. Try to hit the ball at a wall and then try to grab it properly. All these drills if done with dedication can help you become a good basketball player.
